The locomotive will operate under 15 kV AC electrification and on diesel in non-electrified sections without changing traction.

Steiermarkbahn Transport & Logistik has taken delivery of a Vectron Dual Mode locomotive from Siemens Mobility for cross-border freight services between Austria and Germany.

The dual-mode locomotive delivers 2,000 kW at the wheel in both electric and diesel operation. It is equipped with a 2,600-litre diesel tank and can run on HVO fuel. Maximum approved speed is 160 km/h and service weight is 90 tonnes.

The Vectron Dual Mode will be deployed in jointly organised freight services handled by Steiermarkbahn in cooperation with partners. The locomotive is intended to eliminate traction changes at network boundaries or on partially electrified routes.

The unit incorporates components produced in Graz, including bogies. It is fitted with Siemens Trainguard Basic with ETCS Baseline 3.6 and is designed for standard gauge (1,435 mm).
