The X40 series has been in operation for 20 years, covering extensive distances on Swedish railways. The modernization aims to maintain their operational viability by updating passenger amenities and technical features. Changes include redesigned seating, additional legroom, improved mobile phone coverage, and renovated interiors.

The first refurbished train has been deployed on the Västerås–Stockholm route, with future units planned for services on Linköping–Stockholm–Gävle–Ljusdal and Stockholm–Västerås–Örebro–Gothenburg corridors.

Modifications extend to workspaces, with lowered tables and more electrical outlets to accommodate passengers using laptops and mobile devices. Interior lighting has been adjusted for more even distribution, and bicycle storage spaces have been introduced. Exterior repainting and updated materials inside the trains are part of the refurbishment process.
